Humpback Whales, Mother and Calf, on a Cupboard Door.
Humpback whales carved in naturally shed caribou antler and mounted on an up-cycled cupboard door. The base is 11”h x 22” w. Usually I choose an ultramarine blue for whale bases. But this piece of caribou antler had such a distinctive purple tone in it that the burgundy and black colour I’ve painted the base was the only way to go for this piece.
The first time I saw a humpback whale in the Bay of Fundy was also the first time I understood the expression “breathtaking”. I literally lost my breath. I love whales. I love knowing that these majestic creatures occupy the coastal waters near my home. I enjoy the sense of awe I feel when I try to picture them beneath the surface of the water. Our worlds are so close. And yet so different. In my years of carving, whales have remained a favourite subject, both in my sculpture and my jewelry designs.
I design and carve all of my jewelry and sculpture in my studio/ workshop located in Brackley Beach, Prince Edward Island.
I use antler, which is naturally shed and regrown by the animal each year. Once carved, each piece is sanded and buffed to highly polished finish. Each sculpture is signed.
