Fucus

Fucus.

This is the first time I’ve carved seaweed. On a December walk on the beach, before the ice formed, I found myself taking closeup pictures of patterns in the sand and then seaweed. I decided to try carving it and had this piece started before the day was out. Because I designed it to be bigger than one piece of bone, there are multiple joins in the piece. And because these would show no matter how smooth I made them, I decided to create a faux kintsuku effect by adding gold leaf over joints.

The base is a piece of drift wood that I have not painted. It’s stained authentic PEI mud red from its days on the shore before I found it. 18” x 7”.

At this point I would usually say that you can see it Saturday at the Farmers Market. But at this time I don’t have a wall to hang it on. So for the time being, larger wall pieces will be on display in my tiny gallery. Give me a shout if you’d like to come out and see it and poke around the workshop.
